Around The South: Week 1 (2014)

Post by Crimsion on Sat Dec 08, 2012 11:36 pm

Rough Start For Leon
(0-0) Jacksonville Jaguars @ Houston Texans (0-0)

It's always tough to start off a season just the way you want, but when you're a rookie in the NFL it's even tougher. After winning the starting job during the pre-season, rookie quarterback out of Michigan, Don Leoni was looking to match-up against one of the NFL's up and coming quarterbacks, Indianapolis' Andrew Luck.

A few elite receivers went toe-to-toe in this week one match-up. Veteran receivers, Reggie Wayne and Greg Jennings were able to give the Colts offense the spark it needed as they combined for 113 yards and a single touchdown. On the other side of the ball Texans' receiver, Andre Johnson was held to 16 yards on two catches.

Leoni is going to need time to grow into the elite quarterback that the Texans want him to be. Don't go throwing around the bust label just yet, the young gun only has a single NFL game under his belt and in the AFC South it's anyones game. This week the Colts were able to overcome their divisional rivals by a score of 24-10.

Johnson Saves The Day
(0-0) Tennessee Titans vs Detroit Lions (0-0)

Falling just short of the top spot in the AFC South last season, the Tennessee Titans are looking to make the next step this upcoming season and push themselves into the playoff conversation. The road to the promise land started off in Titan Town as the Titans hosted Matt Stafford and the Detroit Lions.

The AFC South was introduced to yet another rookie under center with Miles Quaglieri looking to make a name for himself here in Tennessee. Unfortunately for this young hopeful his night was not one to remember as he sported a 5.5 QB rating in his debut.

On the lighter side of things the Titans were able to shine regardless of their poor quarterback play. Running-back, Chris Johnson is off to yet another solid start as he recorded a total of 112 yards on the ground. Outside of this 100+ yard performance by CJ2k, the offense for both teams struggled for the most part.

It came down to the strength of the defense and a key defensive touchdown that was scored by cornerback, Alterraun Verner. The Titans put the game on the leg of veteran Rob Bironas, who had missed a field-goal earlier in the game. Bironas was able to cash as he gave the Titans a 10-7 lead that would result in a huge first-week win.

CB - A.Smith - 1 Tackle, 1 INT

(1-0) / Next Week: @ Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1)

Cutler Struggles In Debut
(0-0) Jacksonville Jaguars vs Green Bay Packers (0-0)

In hopes of pushing themselves over the hump and hopefully becoming the talk of the AFC South, the Jacksonville Jaguars hit the free agent market this off-season and acquired former Bears' quarterback, Jay Cutler. If the pressure wasn't on the rookie Brenton last year, then it sure is on the 9th year quarterback out of Vanderbilt.

Going up against a very strong defense wasn't what the Jaguars had hoped for to kick-off their season. The recently acquired quarterback, Jay Cutler, had thrown for a total of 233 yards, along with a single touchdown and 5 interceptions. Giving up 28 unanswered points in the third-quarter was the dagger for the Jaguars as this game was won early by the Packers.

With a MVP-Caliber quarterback in Aaron Rodgers and what could be a perennial pro-bowl running-back in Brandon Saine it's no surprise that the Packers were able to dismantel the Jaguars to kick-off their season by a score of 54-20.

DT - C.J. Mosley - 3 Tackles, 1 Sack

QB - A.Rodgers - 14/20, 228 Yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT
HB - B.Saine - 22 Att., 114 Yards (5.2 AVG) / 3 Rec., 62 Yards, 1 TD
WR - J.Nelson - 4 Rec., 91 Yards, 2 TDs
TE - J.Finley - 3 Rec., 35 Yards, 1 TD
FS - M.Burnett - 9 Tackles
CB - T.Williams - 1 Tackle, 2 INTs
